First: What is not a burnout?
A burnout is not a ‘normal’ psychological disorder, ‘because’ it is not mentioned in ‘bible of psychologists’: the DSM-V.
That’s also why a therapy is not paid by the insurance….
Therefore, a GGZ-psychologist will call it an “adjustment disorder” or a “depression”, in order to get paid.
Of course, that’s not in your favor for a right therapy, you can even call it a fraud.
So: What is a burnout?
The WHO and the ICD say it as follows: “Burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not successfully managed.
It is characterized by three dimensions:
- feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;
- increased mental distance from one’s job and
- reduced professional efficacy.
Burnout refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.” (end of quote)
So: maybe burnout will be mentioned in the next edition of the DSM.
But … the problem is: GGZ-psychologists are not educated or trained to treat a burnout!
If a treatment is not paid by the insurance, the employer has to pay for it, cause as said: “it is an occupational disorder, that has not been managed well (by the employer)”.
There’s hope: you are protected by the Dutch law: Bezava .
The following phases during a therapy are important:
- Acknowledgement: you have a burnout!
We have a look at the common symptoms and probable causes. Don’t be surprised that most of the people with a burnout suffer from the same symptoms and causes.
- Recognition: when do which triggers for distress occur?
We look at your positive features, we explore energy depleters and energy providers and how you can relax.
- Stimuli Control: when we recognize all the triggers, you can control and cope with them.
There are a lot of coping mechanisms and pitfalls, we'll train what suits you.
- Control: you are the boss over your thoughts, your feelings and thus your acting.
We have worked with different schemes to clarify how you react on triggers and how you can handle that.
And thus you have become from:
- unconsciously incompetent to:
- consciously incompetent to:
- consciously competent to:
- unconsciously competent: you do the rights things automatically!
Then we have a bright look at your future!
